GIS Development and System Integration

EEC upgraded the existing Pollution Notification/Investigation Database and incorporated the data into a GIS. The database and GIS will be used to track water pollution events in support of the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES). The database stores data from each pollution event and the GIS displays the event locations to identify trends such as repeat offenders, impacted areas, and point sources.

EEC created a customized database that is easy to use, maintain, and expand. The redesign included creating a user-friendly interface, developing queries and reports, designing tables and forms that can be easily expanded, and transferring the existing 4,000 records into the new database. The database was designed so that it can be directly linked and operated through the GIS.

EEC developed the GIS so that new data from the database can be easily integrated. The GIS was designed to allow the user to retrieve and display all of the pertinent data associated with a pollution event. Features of the GIS include an address finder, customized print layouts, and spatial analysis capabilities.
