Groundwater Assessment

Project Highlights:

  • Leaking Gasoline and Diesel Underground Storage Tanks
  • Soil and Groundwater Impacted Petroleum Hydrocarbons
  • EEC Removed UST and Excavated Petroleum Contaminated Soil
  • EEC Installed Groundwater Monitoring Wells to Delineate Groundwater Plume
  • Free Product Measured in the Hot Spot Well
  • Free product activities instituted
  • UST Cleanup Fund Claim Number 18113
  • Recently submitted for RWQCB approval a Workplan for additional groundwater monitoring wells

Two Harbors is located at an elevation of approximately 12 feet above mean sea level (msl) on the northeastern side of Santa Catalina Island, and on the east end of the village of Two Harbors adjacent to Isthmus Cove.

EEC excavated and removed one 20,000-gallon diesel UST and one 20,000-gallon dual compartment diesel/gasoline UST from the site. During the removal activities shallow groundwater conditions (7 feet bgs) was encountered. Because shallow groundwater conditions existed, the accumulated groundwater in the excavation contained a a layer of floating liquid phase hydrocarbon.

EEC initiated a soil and groundwater investigation with the RWQCB - Los Angeles oversight and installed ten groundwater monitoring wells and began a groundwater monitoring and free product recovery program.
